Should I keep my coaching a Secret?
Coaching can provide a tremendous value to anyone seeking an increase in performance but unfortunately, for people other than athletes and sometimes singers who hire coaches to better their vocal performances coaching is somewhat taboo for professionals.
For the past two decades, I have been coaching young and old, men and women’s, business executives, sales reps etc. Some of the conclusion I was able to draw after several hundreds of meetings was that a vast majority of people prefer not to let anyone know they are receiving coaching advice’s from a coach and even prefer to keep quiet their interest for the subject.
Well, the reasons can take many different shape and forms. For some, there is the shameful idea of letting other people know they needed help to become better. For those people the rise to success should not be attributed to external help, they want to show the whole world that they could do it all by themselves.
Lack of confidence in their decisions
Some client can take up to a couple of weeks to feel very comfortable with their coaches, during those weeks, we often hear them saying they did not want to talk about their coaching to anyone as they feared their spouses or friends would try to change their mind towards coaching.
This self-imposed and self-constructed feeling, one of the most powerful a human being can create a real nightmare inside of the client’s mind. Fear will make them think that if someone would ever discover they are receiving coaching advice’s that their reputation would be affected and they would lose all the merit they had achieved. Some of them go to great lengths to hide their real catalyst to success preferring Skype call to live one on one meetings.
What are the Solutions?
-Stay in the dark, if this is where you feel more comfortable, this is the easy way around the problem tough it doesn’t solve anything
-Make a move for yourself and be yourself, who has a word to say about your choices, why would this matter to anyone anyway?, this is no people’s business to know how you decide to improve your capability.
-Recognize that coaching is not a weakness but a strength, this is sometimes an argument that is worth the fight with detractors. After all who has ever been to the Olympic’s or make to Hollywood or the PGA without a coach. All the best in any trade and any industries were at some point followed by great coaches. It is worth the try to educate people trying to discourage you from getting into performance mode.
If you like to keep it a secret, this is your choice and we will honor your decision.
You coach is not in the business of making him/her popular by posting pics of his clients on Facebook, they are concentrating and keeping the focus on a simple goal; MAKING YOU MORE SUCCESSFUL.
This is why Steve Longs and his assistant coaches are all aware of the major implication of privacy this represent. They are bound to secrecy by the company and as a second level towards the client by a clear International NDA (nondisclosure agreement). No pictures, no filming is ever allowed by our coaches unless you agree with it in the first place.
