How do we know what we are truly capable of?
It’s all about the scale of your dreams. How big can you imagine your life? That depends.
When Steve Long decided he was going to build his own boat and sail around the world, how did he know he could accomplish this? Many of us might never be able to imagine this feat, but Steve did. The difference between the rest of us, and someone who knows that they can set goals that high – the scale of our lives.
Travelling around the world, Steve learned a lot about the circumstances of our lives that determine how we see our potential. If you meet someone like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, or Richard Branson, you’ll soon discover how large of a scale their dreams are on. There is nothing they cannot conceive of doing. But talk to someone who is making less than 3 dollars a day in Trinidad, and you’ll realize that his life goals are much different. Just to bring back enough food to feed his family is an accomplishment. So our circumstances in life do change the scale of our potential in life. But how can we change this?
We can change the potential of our lives at any time. But where do we start? Here are three ways you can increase your potential in life, and start living life on a much bigger scale:
Hire a coach or mentor.
Sometimes all you need to increase the size of your life’s potential is for someone else to show you what’s truly available. Find someone whose success you admire, and want to emulate. Their scale of success is already much bigger than yours. Find out how they got there. Listen. Follow-through on their advice. Listen. Start seeing your life differently.
Start getting things done.
You are never going to be able to do bigger goals until you start building some smaller accomplishments in your life. Could you imagine trying to run a marathon today, without any training, or running experience? Not very likely. If you want to run a marathon, you need to start running. Once you run 5 miles every day, you can imagine running 6, then 7, and so on. Build the potential for your life by doing. Start small, then think big.
Change your circumstances.
What kind of time are you investing in your own potential? If you want to change the scale of success in your life, what sacrifices are you willing to make to get there? Yes, some of us come from tough backgrounds or tough circumstances which make just surviving life a challenge. But there are ways to change your circumstances in life, and become more than you ever thought was possible.
Steve Long did not come from a wealthy, well-connected family. He grew up in a working-class family in Montreal, but that didn’t stop him from finding his unique niche in this world. Success in our lives will always be filtered through the scale of your life. Steve has realized many times in his journey that he wasn’t living up to his full potential and that he needed to find a way to increase the scale of success in his own life.
